Here's a few photos that I have taken over the last few days of the weather
here in Whistler. Some shots of the first snowfall last week and then of the
flooding this week. We have have had over 460 mm in the last 5 days with
extensive flooding around the rivers and they are calling it the storm of the
century. We have broken (by far!) all rainfall records for the last 70 to 100
years. Not many houses in Whistler were affected, but Pemberton and Squamish
had extensive flooding in the valleys with over 500 evacuated. There was a
bridge washed away between Whistler and Pemberton and two vehicles with 4
people were lost (one of the vehicles were the bartenders that were serving us
earlier in the evening at Moe Joe's bar, here in town!). South of Whistler
about 400 feet of highway have been washed away by the river...the highway was
open last night for about 8 hours for the first time in 2 days, one lane half
on the shoulder because the other half of the highway is totally washed away
and undermined.
We actually got out and walked quite a bit with the kids to watch the
impressive action of the flooding. The kids are doing well and Kristjan is
enjoying kindergarten. I'm sure he won't be impressed when he figures out his
field trip to the pumpkin farm in Pemberton is cancelled! They say at the
earliest that the highway between Whistler and Pemberton may be open by the
end of the week! They were airlifting food supplies in today as the highway
northbound is closed as well because of flooding. Forecasts are not great for
the rest of the week, more storms and heavy rain almost everyday with 40 to 60
mm forecast for the next 8 hours. I guess we may have to invest in a boat!
Hope you are all well!
